About Us....

The Shreveport Womens Golf Association was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and friendly competition among local amateur women golfers. Ladies in this association (SWGA) must have a handicap index of 30.0 or less.

Our sister group, the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Association, was created for the same purpose, but includes only ladies who have reached at least their fiftieth birthday.
Ladies can be members of either or both organizations as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the appropriate membership dues to each group. This membership entitles ladies to play at least once (in each association) at each of the six golf/country clubs that are participants in the SWGA and SSWGA groups: Bomber Bayou Golf Club, East Ridge Country Club, Huntington Park/Querbes Golf Clubs, Northwood Hills Golf Club, Golf Club at Stonebride, and Southern Trace Country Club.

LGA Internet Score Posting

Many of you have asked how to access your LGA account via the internet so that you could post your scores at home when you forget or don't have access to the course computer.  For your convenience, Lee Rainwater who is in charge of this area of the LGA, has provided some in-depth instructions for you to set up your "My LGA" account.  I will also include the link in the right column of this blog so that it won't disappear as new posts move the information down the page.  If the instructions don't work for you, let me know at golfingladybug@gmail.com and I'll be happy to help you with it.

SWGA Annual Meeting/Luncheon

The new golfing season for the Shreveport Womens' Golf Association was kicked off on Friday, January 18, with the Annual Meeting and Luncheon.  Forty-six ladies met at the Northwood Hills Golf Club Restaurant to reflect on the past year, say goodbye to outgoing officers and welcome the incoming officers, and recognize members with the End-of-Year Awards.  In addition to the business at hand, there was great socializing and a wonderful menu of items to suit everyone's taste.

After enjoying the great lunch, each officer made presentations regarding their areas of responsibility, but the highlight of the meeting is the announcement of the End-of-Year Awards recipients.  To qualify for one of these awards, the member must have a minimum of five SWGA scores posted.  If she has more than five, the five best scores are used to compute the average.  Thirty-eight ladies were eligible for the awards this year.  Events Chairman Grace Ireland presented gift card awards to the following ladies:

Most Improved Handicap Index:  Kathy Davis (STCC) who reduced her handicap by 5.3 strokes from 15.8 to 10.5.  Second best improvement was by Suzanne Tinsley (STCC) with a 5 stroke reduction.
Low Gross:  Lillian Granger (STCC) with an average gross score of 85.8
2nd Low Gross:  Kathy Davis (STCC) with an average gross score of 86.2

Low Net:  Kathleen McCoy (BWGA) with an average net score of 68.6
2nd Low Net: Jeanette Bohringer (BWGA) with an average net score of 70.8
3rd Low Net: Cathy Buckley (BWGA) with an average net score of 71.0
4th Low Net: Martha Lawhorne (BWGA) with an average net score of 71.2

Low Putts: (tie) Phyllis Ryan (ERCC) and Kathleen McCoy (BWGA) with an average of 31.6 putts.
2nd Low Putts:  Brenda Graves (FRLGA) with an average of 32.2 putts

What is considered an admirable accomplishment is the 100% participation award.  To earn this award, ladies must have participated in all SWGA events except Team Matches and the Jingle Bell Scramble.  This year there were eight required events and we had seven ladies that accomplished this feat, in addition to participating in those two non-required events.  These honorees are:

Shirley Pettitt (BWGA), Cathy Buckley (BWGA), Grace Ireland (PCC), Kathleen McCoy (BWGA), Mary Gallagher (FRLGA), Mary Moore (FRLGA) and Phyllis Ryan (ERCC).

2012 President Jill Litton passed the virtual gavel along to new President Mary Gallagher of Fox Run Golf Club.  The new slate of officers for 2013 are:
President: Mary Gallagher, Fox Run
1st VP: Lillian Granger, Southern Trace
2nd VP:  Kathleen McCoy, Broadmoor
Secretary: Joyce Middleton, EastRidge
Treasurer:  Jimmie Zey, Palmetto
Events: Suzanne Tinsley, StoneBridge
Publicity: Marge Snyder, Northwood
Ex-Officio: Jill Litton, Northwood

This year's club representatives were also announced and are listed in the lower portion of the right column of this blog.

New Events Chairman Suzanne Tinsley announced that the posting of handicaps will be monitored closely.  She will personally check to make sure that you have posted your SWGA event score.  If it has not been posted within two weeks of the event, you will be able to play in the next event, but your score will not count as having competed in the event.  If you have problems with posting your scores, please ask for assistance.  It is important to protect the integrity of our handicap system to have complete and accurate score posting.

The dates, places, and times of all SWGA events has been sent out via separate email so that you can SAVE THE DATES.  In addition, the dates of all SWGA, SSWGA, State, local and non-local events are listed at the bottom of this blog.

SWGA Annual Meeting and Luncheon

Happy New Year everyone!!!  Besides being a new YEAR, this marks the beginning of a new golfing season.  Hoorah!

To start us off motivated and ready to tackle an exciting year of golfing events, our Annual Meeting and Luncheon will be held on January 18th at Northwood Hills Golf Club, 5000 Northwood Hills Drive, Shreveport (actually, it's right at Blanchard, LA).  Cocktails will be available starting at 11:00am (it's 5:00 somewhere) and the meeting will kick off at 11:30am.

The luncheon buffet will be $15 which includes tax and gratuity.  This is the menu:  Chicken Breast in Wine Sauce, Pork Loin, Rice Pilaf, Vegetable Medley, Lima Beans, Bread Pudding, Blueberry Cobbler, Rolls/Cornbread, Salad Bar, Tea and Coffee.

Besides the wonderful meal, the purpose of the meeting is to look back on 2012 and our accomplishments, to install new Officers for 2013, find out what to expect for the new year, present end-of-year awards, and have some good, old-fashioned socializing!

Please sign up with your Club Rep no later than January 15 AND be prepared to pay for your meal by cash or check (payable to Northwood Golf Course).  Feel free to attend the luncheon even if you didn't participate in a single event in 2012, or if you weren't a member in 2012 but plan to join this year.  Just come and enjoy the fellowship.  Hope to see you there!

SWGA/SSWGA Jingle Bell Scramble

With a gloomy weather forecast for the day, forty-one ladies turned out in spite of it to play in the annual Jingle Bell 4-lady scramble at Northwood Hills.  As it turned out, the weather was great....the best we've had for this tournament in a long, long time.....short sleeve weather in fact.
All the players brought gifts for the Toys for Tots program and during the Awards Luncheon, four really cool Marines came and collected the toys from under the beautifully decorated tree provided by the Northwood ladies.

After a few last minute changes, we ended up with eleven teams.  The scores ranged from 74 to 66.  First place honors when to Team Pettitt (pictured left to right-Judy Ferguson (STCC), Mary Gallagher (FRLGA), Susan Berry (NHGC), and Shirley Pettitt (BWGA).
Other winners were:
2nd Place shot 67:
Gloria Utley (WGAS), Sandra West (NHGC) and Bobbie Almond (PCC)
3rd Place shot 68:
Cathy Buckley (BWGA), Vicki Cella (NHGC), Grace Ireland (PCC), and Vien Wheeler (STCC)
4th Place shot 68:
Joyce Middleton (ERCC), Jeanette Bohringer (BWGA), and Melissa Brenner (NHGC)
5th Place shot 69:
Linda Heins (WGAS), Robbie Fisher (BWGA), Joanne McDonald (BWGA), and Mary Moore (FRLGA)
6th Place shot 70:
Paulette Lee (WGAS), Gayle Gansfuss (ERCC), Theresa Kruse (PCC), and Janet Sabo (NHGC)

There was actually a tie for 6th place and the team that lost the scorecard playoff was Kim Darnell, Kathleen McCoy, Phyllis Graybiel, and Alyce Wyche.

Closest to the Pin winners were Jill Litton (NHGC) and Shirley Pettitt (BWGA).
Closest to the Line winner was Judy Ferguson (STCC) just a few inches off the line.

It was great fun, fellowship, and food.  As usual, the Northwood ladies outdid themselves with homemade goodies and the awards luncheon was exceptionally great.....especially the bread pudding!!!

This completes the SWGA schedule for the year, and it has been a great one!  Our next function is the annual meeting/luncheon which will be held at Northwood in January (date to be announced).  You will receive an email notification with all the details.
