About Us....

The Shreveport Womens Golf Association was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and friendly competition among local amateur women golfers. Ladies in this association (SWGA) must have a handicap index of 30.0 or less.

Our sister group, the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Association, was created for the same purpose, but includes only ladies who have reached at least their fiftieth birthday.
Ladies can be members of either or both organizations as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the appropriate membership dues to each group. This membership entitles ladies to play at least once (in each association) at each of the six golf/country clubs that are participants in the SWGA and SSWGA groups: Bomber Bayou Golf Club, East Ridge Country Club, Huntington Park/Querbes Golf Clubs, Northwood Hills Golf Club, Golf Club at Stonebride, and Southern Trace Country Club.

SWGA at Eastridge

I apologize for the delay in getting the results of the playday posted for everyone; however, I haven't had internet availiability since that day.

We had a really good turnout with 49 ladies playing.  I also need to apologize for the misunderstanding of how to play Hole #10.  I had made arrangements when it was scheduled in March to have the rules printed out, but it just slipped my mind until I arrived on Tuesday, so we thought that announcing the rules would be adequate.  Apparently some ladies didn't hear how it would work.  I feel really bad about that.  You can bet that it won't happen again, not that it helps anything for this time.

Just so you'll know how it was SUPPOSED to work:  after hitting a ball into the ditch, whether it was your first, second, or ANY shot, you could walk around to the drop zone and take an extra penalty shot.  Once again, I sincerely regret the mix-up.  Please check out the right column for a list of winners and a small slideshow.

The next SWGA playday will be at Southern Trace on June 15.

The term "Caddie"

Ever wonder where the term "caddie" came from?  One of the most popular stories about the origin deals with a "lady" golfer.

When Mary (later Queen of Scots) went to France as a young girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scottish game 'golf.' We are told that he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment.

To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her.  In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it to 'caddie.'

SSWGA Playday Palmetto CC

In addition to our SSWGA playday at Palmetto CC, it was also Marie McFarland's birthday.  Hope it was a good one for her!

We had forty ladies participating in today's event on a beautiful, warm day.  The course was in great shape and everyone enjoyed the day....especially Grace Ireland who shot her all-time low score of 83.  Congratulations Grace!

SWGA Crooked Hollow Playday

Northwood Hills GC hosted our May 3rd playday at the Crooked Hollow Golf Course on a beautiful, sunny day.  Thirty-eight ladies participated and enjoyed the day.  The greens were a bit rough, but that was offset by extremely long "roll" in the fairways.  Hope everyone enjoyed the great breakfast and warm hospitality that John Graham always provides at Crooked Hollow.   For list of winners, check the right column.

Senior Olympics Golf

The Northwest Louisiana Senior Olympics Golf competition was the first of many different events held each year in the Shreveport area.  Unfortunately, only four ladies participated this year on April 23rd at the Crooked Hollow Golf Course.

It was a wet day, but the spirits weren't dampened.  In fact, we understand that at some point the horn was blown to call in golfers due to lightening.  When our foursome of ladies finished our round, we were told that when the horn was blown, the ladies were the only ones that didn't come in.  Susan Berry told them "It was raining so hard we didn't hear the horn."  And she was right, at least about not hearing it.  The senior guys went in and then had to resume play.  Needless to say, the ladies finished the round alot earlier than all the guys.
Winning the gold medal was Donna Cobb (83); the silver, Kathleen McCoy (89); and the bronze, Bobbie Almond (99).  Susan Berry was in 4th place with her 100.  But the good news is that all four ladies qualified to play in the State competition later in the year.

I know. I know. You're saying "these lovely ladies are waaaay too young to be in the SENIOR OLYMPICS!"

Palmetto Classic

Ninety “boot scootin” ladies traded their horses for golf carts to play the Palmetto Classic April 20-22. Probably half of the participants were from out of town, but they didn’t mind the trip. What a fun experience. The first day of best ball really tightened up the field and the second day of scramble ended with a few ties to be broken by scorecard playoffs.
When the covered wagons were all circled, the best scores posted for Low Gross was by the team of Joanna Ward and Lillian Granger with a two-day total of 143.

LWGA State Amateur Championship

I mentioned this event in an earlier posting, but now it’s time to get serious. If you can do only ONE State LWGA event, this is the one!

June 20-23 marks the dates of the 82nd LWGA Amateur Championship held at Koasati Pines in Kinder, LA near the Coushatta Casino Resort. This competition is a match play format and has both winners’ bracket as well as consolation bracket.

If you’ve never played in a state event because you think you’re not good enough, this is the one to try first. So it takes you six strokes to get out of the sand and you lose the hole. You can STILL win the match! You are playing against golfers of your own skill level. And it is FUN!

The practice round and Welcome Dinner is on Sunday, June 20th. You are pre-flighted based on your index and you definitely play on Monday and Tuesday. If you lose both of those matches, you are done. If you win both matches, you go into the winners’ bracket and play on Wednesday. If you lose one of the first two matches, you go into the consolation bracket and play on Wednesday.

The $140 entry fee includes cart rental, golf, range balls, and all social events. It’s a great deal. And if you like casinos, the Coushatta Casino has great accommodations at a preferred rate for players and is a great casino for a fun night of gaming.

For information and entry form, go to the LWGA site at http://www.lwgolfa.com/Tournaments2010.html or click on the sites provided in the earlier posting in this blog at the end of the State Senior Tournament article.

Sure hope you decide to give it a try. You’ll be glad you did.
