About Us....

The Shreveport Womens Golf Association was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and friendly competition among local amateur women golfers. Ladies in this association (SWGA) must have a handicap index of 30.0 or less.

Our sister group, the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Association, was created for the same purpose, but includes only ladies who have reached at least their fiftieth birthday.
Ladies can be members of either or both organizations as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the appropriate membership dues to each group. This membership entitles ladies to play at least once (in each association) at each of the six golf/country clubs that are participants in the SWGA and SSWGA groups: Bomber Bayou Golf Club, East Ridge Country Club, Huntington Park/Querbes Golf Clubs, Northwood Hills Golf Club, Golf Club at Stonebride, and Southern Trace Country Club.

SWGA/SSWGA Jingle Bell Scramble

Brrrrr.  Twenty-nine bunded-up ladies braved the cold, wet conditions and were on standby up till the last moment the night before the December 6 Jingle Bell Scramble.  There had been lots of rain and we weren't sure if it would happen or not, but these determined ladies showed up and enjoyed what is always a good time just before the rush of the Christmas holidays.
Northwood Hills Golf Club hosted the annual event and as usual, it was terrific.  The Northwood ladies even cooked the food themselves for the luncheon and it was GOOD!  The course was in great shape, especially considering the harsh weather that preceded the tournament.  Management outdid themselves to make us all feel welcome.

Ten groups of ladies competed against each other, with scores ranging from 70 to 81.  There was a whole group of 75's that had to find their place after scorecard playoffs.  When it was all counted, the first place team of Tinsley/Airhart/Engelcke shot a really great 70.  Other winners were:

SECOND PLACE:  Graves/Litton/Tatum - 73
THIRD PLACE: Gallagher/Wyche - 75
FOURTH PLACE: Pettitt/Crews/Ronda Smith - 75
FIFTH PLACE: Moore/Suzanne Patton/McCoy - 75

CTP #3 - Vicki Cella
CTP #16 - Gayle Gansfuss
CTL - Joyce Middleton

This was the last event of the 2016 season for both the SWGA and SSWGA.  The next event is the SWGA Annual Luncheon/Meeting on January 13, 2017, at Eastridge Country Club, 11:30am.

SSWGA Turkey Scramble

Another beautiful day for the SSWGA Turkey Scramble at Northwood Golf Club! Thirty-three ladies enjoyed the Northwood hospitality, course, and food on Tuesday, November 15th.

Scores were tight, ranging from 69 to 75. The FIRST PLACE spot was a tie that was decided by scorecard playoff with the winners being Team Pettitt/Litton/Ihle/Brown. The other with that good score, winning SECOND PLACE honors, was Team Buckley/Hawkins/Offer. Good golfing, ladies!
Other winners were:

THIRD PLACE - 72 Middleton/McCoy/Calhoun

FOURTH PLACE – 73 Farr/Colvin/Cheryl Smith/Stella Rice

FIFTH PLACE - 73 Fisher/Snyder/Kathy Davis (NW)/Gilley

The next (and final) event of the year is the Jingle Bell Scramble which is an SWGA/SSWGA combined event at Northwood on December 6th. Hope to see you there!

SWGA Turkey Scramble

Eighty-five degrees on November 3rd?  Yep.  It’s been awhile since we played the SWGA Turkey Scramble while wearing shorts and wishing we had brought the portable fan.

But twenty-eight ladies came out to participate in the 4-person Turkey Scramble at Crooked Hollow, hosted by the Broadmoor Women’s Golf Assn.  And it was a great day of fun and socializing.  As usual, John Graham made us welcome and cooked hamburgers and all the fixings for the awards luncheon.

Of the seven teams, six had scores in the 60’s.  The best score of the day was a 65 by team Shirley Pettitt/Gloria Utley/Kathleen McCoy/ and Kathy Davis (of Northwood).

2016 SSWGA Championship

A foggy morning greeted the ladies participating in the SSWGA Championship on November 1st.  Luckily, the fog lifted shortly after teeing off and it got unseasonably warm.  As usual, the course was beautiful and the ladies were challenged by the undulating, fast greens.

After two days of stroke play, Moise Allen rose to the challenge, winning the championship with duplicate scores of 91, which also gave her Medalist honors.  In Super Senior division, Joyce Middleton won the champion trophy with scores of 94/93, which also gave her the Medalist trophy for that division.  Congratulations to both ladies for some good golfing.

2016 Southern Belle

Another successful Southern Belle 2-Lady tournament!  Ninety-six ladies enjoyed the fun and competition on October 11-12 in beautiful weather and social events at Southern Trace Country Club.

Of the 48 teams, our Shreveport area ladies accounted for NINE of the winning teams.  The overall tournament winners were our own Kathy Davis (STCC) and Debbie Magee (WGAS) with a score of 68 which tied with team Delaughter/Horn from Texarkana, who won overall Low Net.

All participants were treated with a choice of Nike products:  either a pair of shoes, a wind jacket, or a nice bag with a dozen Nike golf balls.  The tee gift at this tournament is always a large treat.

Congratulations to all the winners!

2016 SWGA Championship

It was a HOT and WET two days of the SWGA Championship at Stonebridge after a week of rain, but the course was in good shape in spite of it.  However, if you were planning on your ball “rolling”, you had to make other plans.

Twenty-seven ladies laced up their waterproof golf shoes and waded through water for the two days of cart path only.  But the water didn’t deter Mary Lynn Stuart of Eastridge CC, as she shot a great 76 the first day to win the Medalist Trophy, and followed it up on day two with a 74 to win the Championship.  This isn’t a new experience for Mary Lynn, however, as this is the eighth time since 1976 that she has achieved this honor.  Congratulations Mary Lynn!

The low score for Net Medalist the first day was an incredible 60 by Suzanne Tinsley, also of Eastridge CC, climbing her way to this position from the second flight!  She came back the second day and shot the same score, which gave her the Net Champion Trophy.  Congratulations Suzanne!
Overall low putts for the day was a super low 57 by Becky Farr of Stonebridge CC.  Her 57 putts for two days was over 10 strokes better than the average putts for the entire field!  That’s some good putting!

In spite of the wet conditions, everyone had a good time and enjoyed lunch and fellowship after getting in out of the heat to wait for the tournament results.  Thanks to Debbie Magee who took over the Championship duties at the last minute and was able to make it a great success.

SWGA Playday at Southern Trace

The Hottest golfing day of the year!!! Well, it may not have been, but it felt like it for the 35 ladies that nearly suffered heat stroke at our SWGA Playday at Southern Trace on Thursday, August 11. It was HOT!

And everyone who finished (and that would be everyone but ME) are surely WINNERS for taking on the weather and BEATING it! The course was, as usual, beautiful and in great condition. Mary Lynn Stuart (ERCC) took advantage of the great conditions and shot the low round of the day with a really fine 81, followed closely by Kathy Davis who was playing at her home course and shot a nice 83. The overall low net score was 72 with a tie between Kathryn Salpietra (STCC) and Marge Snyder (NHGC). And did I mention….it was HOT??!!!

The greens were a nice speed (average of 34.2 putts) for most ladies, with putts ranging from 29 to 42. The 42-putter will reman anonymous, but the 29-putters are to be applauded and they were Suzanne Patton (BWGA) and Mary Lynn Stuart. West Team wins Barbara Faye White Cup

Another exciting Barbara Faye White Cup Team Matches event on July 26th at Northwood Hills Golf Club! Forty-four ladies (not necessarily the same 44 as the first day) paired up into two-lady teams using a handicapped match play scramble format for a day of suspense and excitement.

The West Team was leading the East Team by only one point going into the second day, so it could have gone either way. But when the last teams finished, several taking all eighteen holes, the West Team was the victor, winning the second day with the same 6-5 score, for a total of 12 to 10 points.
Congratulations to the West Team that consisted of Northwood, Southern Trace, and BWGA at Shreveport CC! The East Team fought a great battle and everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats (eating a BEAUTIFUL salad) as the teams were finishing their matches. It was looking like a East victory at first, but the last teams in were West winners. It was a great day on the course!

Northwood was a great venue for the matches and the hospitality was great. Chairman Jimmie Zey did an outstanding job putting it all together, including a wonderful awards luncheon that included that beautiful fruit/chicken salad, warm chocolate cake, and frozen slushy iced tea. Yum!
Next year’s matches will be hosted by the Fox Run ladies. I’m already looking forward to it!

Barbara Faye White Cup Team Matches

Day 1 of the Barbara Faye White Cup Team Matches got off to a hot start today, July 21, at Northwood Hills Golf Club. Chairman Jimmie Zey juggled participants and pairings till the last minute, but much like a wedding, it all came out great. Forty-four ladies participated in 98* temps and did an outstanding job.
The six SWGA Association Clubs are divided into two teams: the East and the West, although the division is no longer a true east and west since we lost Palmetto CC. The East Team is Stonebridge CC, Eastridge CC, and Fox Run Golf Club.  The West Team is Northwood Hills GC, Southern Trace CC, and Shreveport CC.

The format is a scramble, match play, with handicap, although most teams were evenly matched. Most teams went the full eighteen holes to determine winners, with the final score being West: 6 and East: 5. The second and final day of Team Matches will be Tuesday, July 26, when the winners will be determined. It is sure to be a close race. Thanks to the Northwood ladies and staff for their warm hospitality with this event. I heard there was a request for brownies on Tuesday!

Bonnie and Clyde Couples Tournament

The Bonnie and Clyde Couples Tournament brought out fifty-four couples for the weekend of June 25-26 at Northwood Hills Golf Club.  The heat was strong, but the players were too.  There was about an hour rain delay on day 2, but it didn’t dampen the spirits.

The lowest single round of the event was a 63 by Team Coatney/Coatney while the lowest combined two-day total was a nice 130 (66/64) by Team Faulkner/Faulkner.  The format was a scramble, but the flighting wasn’t done until after both days’ play and a blind draw ended with the first day being the flighting day.

It was a great tournament with a couple “gimmick” treats like a “pick up” on the green for each player, each day.  Both the Bonnies and the Clydes got to move up considerably one day each on #18 hole, and that was surely a treat.  The beverage cart was putting on a lot of mileage with free drinks all day and the food was an assortment of Italian and Tex-Mex favorites.  The free Club Car offered for the first hole-in-one got to go home to Golf Carts of Louisiana, but it was a great incentive.  Pam Crews and her crew of helpers put on a great tournament again this year!

Mary Lynn Stuart (ERCC) had the low round of the day with a really nice 83, followed by Suzanne Tinsley with an 86.  Overall Low Net Score was a 63 by Melissa Brenner, whose low putts must have helped achieve that low score!  And showing off at her home course was Martha Lawhorne who holed out from 88 yards on #15 for a birdie!  Good golfing ladies!

BWGA Member/Guest Scramble

The Broadmoor Womens’ Golf Association at Shreveport Country Club hosted its first Member/Guest Scramble competition on Wednesday, May 25.  It was a beautiful day for the twenty-six ladies that came together for good fun, food, and friendship.

The fun started with a putting contest that consisted of two attempts at approximately 25 feet from the hole.  After all had given it a try, there were two ladies that MADE THE PUTT:  Jeanette Bohringer and Judy Ferguson.  That called for a putt-off, and Jeanette got the closest on that attempt.  Congratulations on some great putting!

The course was in great shape and lunch was really tasty and refreshing after the temperatures had started to soar.  Events Chairman Nina Glorioso and her committee did an outstanding job, using the red/white/blue theme and flags as a tribute to those we miss so dearly during this Memorial Day season.

Members invited guests that were from other clubs, and even other cities, to join them in this scramble format.  There were only net score prizes since it was handicapped.

FIRST FLIGHT:
1st Place: Member Shirley Pettitt/Guest Joyce Middleton 63.5
2nd Place: Member Jeanette Bohringer/Guest Debbie Magee 66.9

It was a really great event and we hope to continue to do this in the future with even more teams!

Southern Belle Rescheduled

A message from Southern Belle Tournament Chairman Kathy Davis:

Dear Southern Belle participant,

In the last six weeks Southern Trace has endured over 33” of rain. With the most recent storms last night and over the weekend we regret to inform you that this year’s event has been rescheduled for October 11-12.

We did everything we could to prepare the golf course, but unfortunately at this time some of the holes on the back 9 are closed and unplayable.

We will reserve your team for the reschedule date until June 1 at which time we will open the field to those teams on the current waiting list. Please call the Golf Shop at 318-798-8301 beginning Tuesday May 3 to confirm entry for the new date. If you submitted a check it will be shredded and we ask that you bring a new check with you on October 11.

Once again we are very sorry and look forward to an exciting event in the fall with our Olympic Swing for Gold theme.

Eastridge Member/Member Tournament

The Eastridge CC Ladies Association had its Member/Member Ringer Board Scramble Tournament on April 12 and 14.  Eleven 2-lady teams vied for the championship in this interesting format.  After playing the scramble on the first day, if the team scored better on any hole on the second day, the larger number was reduced to the second day's score on that hole.   Sounds like fun!

Joyce Middleton and Debbie Rolland started with a 74 on the first day, but on day two, they were able to replace a double bogey with a par, replaced two pars with birdies, and changed a bogey to a par for a final score of 67 Gross.  Congratulations ladies!

The other winners were Net winners, with Team Mullin/Corby scoring a net 58 and Team Rice/Oxner taking second Net with a 60.  Congratulations to all!

Wine and Roses

Bleak weather forecasts made wardrobe planning a real nightmare for the Wine and Roses 2-lady Scramble at Alexandria Country Club on April 12-13, but when all was said and done, it was great weather for both the practice round AND tournament!  Hoorah!

Forty three teams of ladies competed for the twelve winning spots, and FIVE of our eleven Shreveport area teams won one of those spots!

As usual, there was a light meal for the welcoming party and lots of wine with a really great live band that had the ladies up on their feet and "boogie'ing".  Fun was had by all and it was a good time to visit ladies we hadn't seen since last golfing season.
The highlight of the practice round day was a Hole-in-One by our own Hui Bordelon (FRLGA) on Hole #7.  Congratulations Hui!

The highlight of the tournament was our own team Lillian Granger/Moise Allen winning the very TOP spot in the completion with a nice 71 score.  Good playing gals!

SSWGA Crooked Hollow Playday

Crooked Hollow Golf Club was the venue for the second SSWGA Playday of 2016.  Twenty-four ladies enjoyed playing in beautiful weather and enjoyed the hospitality of Manager John Graham.

This event was the first since we lost our Events Chairman Susan Berry, so the event was started with a brief prayer in Susan’s honor.  A big THANKS to Marge Snyder who has stepped up to take over for Susan.
The low gross score of the day was a nice 85 by Hui Bordelon (FRLGA) and the Low Net was 67 by Martha Lawhorne (BWGA).  Putting was TOUGH, as the greens were super fast, but a couple of our ladies “mastered” them nicely.  In addition, Donna Ihle had an Eagle on Hole #1 and Pat Miller chipped in on Hole #3.  Congratulations ladies!

SWGA Fox Run Scramble

FINALLY.  We managed to kick off our 2016 SWGA golfing season, after being rained out the first time and BARELY sneaking in between raindrops on March 31st.  Our kick-off scramble at Fox Run hosted 34 ladies who “gambled” with making the trip early that morning with the threat of rain looming.  As it turned out, it was a nice day and we were 90 degree on almost all holes, rather than the cart path only we were expecting.

We went from 49 who had originally signed up to 34 that showed up, so pairings done by new Events Chairman Martha Lawhorne had to be re-shuffled at the last minute, but everyone had a great time, no matter how they were paired.

The course was wet, the air was thick, the wind was a bit gusty, but Carmen Leach (FRLGA) and her team of Kyong Lee (BWGA) and Ronda Smith (FRLGA) managed to shoot a really nice 67.  Congratulations gals!

SECOND PLACE (tie)
Cathy Jacobs (ERCC) - 71
Nancy Alexander (FRLGA)
Stella Rice (ERCC)

Vicki Cella (NHGC)- 71
Barbara McQuiller (BWGA)
Hui Bordelon (FRLGA)
Pam Crews (NHGC)

THIRD PLACE
Cathy Buckley (BWGA) - 72
Alyce Wyche (NHGC)
Pat Miller (BWGA)
Mira Zileska (FRLGA)

There was also a closest to the hole on Hole #10…..BUT….34 ladies missed the green!  However, I did witness Mary Moore (FRLGA) chip-in on that hole for a beautiful birdie!

Thanks for Fox Run for the warm hospitality and patience with our last minute decision to play that day.  Our next SWGA event is at Stonebridge on April 19th, 9:00am shotgun.  Hope to see you there.

Remember, if you missed this first event, you can still get 100% participation if you play in at least one of the Team Matches!

SWGA Playday at Fox Run

NOTICE *** NOTICE *** NOTICE
The first playday of the 2016 season for the Shreveport Women's Golf Assn. was scheduled for St. Patrick's Day, March 17th at Fox Run.  Due to the horrible weather and so much flooding, the management at Fox Run states that the course won't be playable for at least 1 1/2 weeks.  Therefore the March 17th playday is re-scheduled to March 31st at Fox Run at 9:30am.

SSWGA Stonebridge Scramble

Shreveport Senior Women’s Golf Assn. kicked off the 2016 golfing season with a scramble at The Golf Club at Stonebridge on Tuesday, March 8th.  Twenty-nine ladies showed up in what was considered “questionable” weather conditions forecast for the day and the upcoming week.  But it ended up with a pretty nice day with just a few sprinkles on the last couple holes.

Because of an unequal number of people, there some 4-lady teams and some 3-lady teams.  Therefore, one person (excluding the “A” player) sat out on each hole so that only three people participated.  Some people liked that “equalization” concept and some didn’t, but it is what it is.  It was fun and everyone had a good outing.

Not sure how many teams there were, but the top three were as follows:

FIRST PLACE:  70
Debbie Magee
Barbara Offer
Linda Tatum

SECOND PLACE:  72
Cathy Buckley
Carmen Leach
Susan Berry

THIRD PLACE: 73
Dot Henson
Nancy Young
Grace Ireland
Bobbie Jo Almond

The course was in great shape, but that changed quickly starting the next day when the floods started, and at this date, the course is mostly under water.  Most of the courses in our area are suffering the same problem which will probably cause some re-scheduling of events.

Thanks to Donna Ihle for taking pictures of this event for us.
Click here to view the photos.  The blog keeps changing and won't let me put a slideshow as I have done in the past.  Hopefully they will get it changed.

It's time again for the Senior Olympics events to kick off in the Northwest Louisiana District.  There are countless games in which to participate from March 26 to May 31st.

Obviously, this post is to encourage you to participate in the GOLF EVENT on April 22nd, held at Northwood Golf and Country Club, 5000 Northwood Hills Drive, Shreveport, LA.  There is a Chip and Putt contest that precedes the golfing that day and starts at 8:30am.  The Golfing event starts at 9:30am.  The facility fee of $35 includes both events and has in the past included a luncheon.

This is a "scratch" event so your handicap doesn't come into play as you are competing in "age" brackets.  The top three in each age bracket (male and female) win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals which automatically qualifies you to compete in the State Event later in the year, usually in South Louisiana.  You can go all the way to the National event if you stay in the winning categories.  You can also qualify to move on to the State event based on your score.

For more information and entry form, Click Here.  Be sure to click on the Participant Information and Game Schedule tabs at the top of that page for more information.

SWGA Annual Meeting/Luncheon

Shreveport CC was the venue for the Annual SWGA Meeting and Luncheon to launch 2016’s golfing activities…. to say goodbye to the old Officers, to welcome the new, and present the End of Year Awards for 2015.

Forty-seven ladies, over half of our membership, enjoyed the food and fellowship, as usual, since we have few opportunities to simply ”visit” as a group.

All Officers reported on their areas of responsibility and it was a tremendously successful year, in spite of numerous event re-schedulings due to bad weather.  We had four stroke play events, the two-day championship at a totally new and neutral venue (Huntington Park), three scramble events, and an amazing Team Match two-day event that ended in a tie.  What a year!

Events Chairman Moise Allen started the End of Year Awards presentation with those who had attained 100% participation for 2015, which was the first time we tried a new system.  If any member missed one “required” event, but participated in at least one Team Match event, they were still considered as having 100% participation.  We had nine ladies who attained a TRUE 100% participation:  Bobby Jo Almond, Cathy Buckley, Hui Bordelon, Gayle Gansfuss, Grace Ireland, Martha Lawhorne, Mary Moore, Jill Litton and Marge Snyder.  Five ladies missed one regular event, but played in at least one day of Team Matches: Vicki Cella, Kathy Davis, Carmen Leach, Joyce Middleton, and Mary Lynn Stuart.

Gross, net, and putt awards were based on your lowest four scores in each area.  The Low Net Awards were decided by hundredths of a point.
1st Low Net: (Avg. 69.1) Gayle Gansfuss, FRLGA
2nd Low Net: (Avg. 69.20) Hui Bordelon, FRLGA
3rd Low Net: (Avg. 69.25) Vicki Cella, NHGC
4th Low Net: (Avg. 69.5) Mary Moore, FRLGA
The low gross awards were just as close: 1st Low Gross: (Avg. 79) Mary Lynn Stuart, ERCC

2nd Low Gross: (Avg. 79.75) Kathy Davis, STCC

Low Putts winner was Kathy Davis with an average of 29.  Great putting!

The most improved Handicap Index award went to Martha Lawhorne, BWGA, after decreasing her index by 4.5 points.  That’s great!

2015 President Kathleen McCoy introduced the new Officers for 2016:
President: Joyce Middleton, ERCC
1st VP (Championship): Suzanne Tinsley, WGAS
2nd VP (Team Matches): Jimmie Zey, NHGC
Secretary: Mary Moore, FRLGA

Treasurer: Moise Allen, STCC
Events: Martha Lawhorne, BWGA @ SCC

The Club Reps for 2016 are listed in the right hand column of this blog.

McCoy announced that this year, we will be paying $30 for each of our playday events, an increase of $5 from the past few years.  Our first SWGA event is a scramble at Fox Run on St. Patricks Day (March 17), so wear your green!  Hope to see you there!
