About Us....

The Shreveport Womens Golf Association was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and friendly competition among local amateur women golfers. Ladies in this association (SWGA) must have a handicap index of 30.0 or less.

Our sister group, the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Association, was created for the same purpose, but includes only ladies who have reached at least their fiftieth birthday.
Ladies can be members of either or both organizations as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the appropriate membership dues to each group. This membership entitles ladies to play at least once (in each association) at each of the six golf/country clubs that are participants in the SWGA and SSWGA groups: Bomber Bayou Golf Club, East Ridge Country Club, Huntington Park/Querbes Golf Clubs, Northwood Hills Golf Club, Golf Club at Stonebride, and Southern Trace Country Club.

Lady Calvert Tournament

Calvert Crossing Country Club was the site of the Lady Calvert two-lady scramble at Calhoun, LA.  It was flighted after play, so everyone had a chance to win, no matter what their handicaps.

Hospitality and course were great, especially considering how much relentless rain we have had.  For those of you who have never experienced this course, it is one of those traditional, tree-abundant courses where you have to drive a little distance between most greens and the next tee.  The beautiful homes that lined the course are set back considerably, with wonderfully manicured landscaping and abundant colors.

It was hit-and-miss up to the last minute as to whether the tournament would be postponed due to rain forecasts.  The decision to “carry on” as planned was probably a good one in spite of the cart-paths-only condition on the day of the tournament.  It was a drizzle-sunshine-sauna-drizzle-sunshine-sauna day…..but we finished and we were all winners.
Shreveport was represented well by five teams….with two teams in the winners’ circle.  Best score of the day was a great 67 by Marge Richters and Cori Stegall.

This club is also hosting its annual Lords and Ladies Couples Tournament on August 1-2.  For more information, contact the Calvert Crossing Pro Shop.

Friendship

A friend recently sent me this, and I think it reflects what many of us experience, even if we aren't aware of it at the time.  It starts slow, but hang in there.  You'll get something out of it........

In an evening class at Stanford University , the last lecture was on the mind-body connection -- the relationship between stress and disease.

The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman ...  where as for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends.

At first everyone laughed, but he was serious. Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically, this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more serotonin -- a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being.

Women share feelings, whereas men often form relationships around activities. We share from our souls with our sisters/mothers, and evidently that is very GOOD for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.

There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged? Not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking!

So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health!  We are indeed very, very lucky. Sooooo let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health and happiness!

Southern Belle Invitational

The Southern Belle was hosted again at the pristine Southern Trace Country Club on Wednesday, May 6th with practice round on Tuesday.  After practice, there was a “pool party” which included wonderful food and a putting contest.  And once again, tee gift was a pair of Nike shoes!

A whopping field of 68 teams filled the course, which made for a very long day.  The shamble/scramble format is always fun though, and when the scores were tallied, the Overall Gross winners were tied with a score of 70.

After a sudden death playoff which lasted only one hole, Vicki DeLaughter and Teresa Horn were triumphant over Kathy Davis and Debbie Magee, who ended up winning Low Gross in the First Flight.

Overall Low Net went to team Martinak and Salisbury with a nice score of 62.  With only four flights, the winners in each flight had to really shine to win their spots.  Twelve of our local girls were winners.   Congratulations to all!
