About Us....

The Shreveport Womens Golf Association was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and friendly competition among local amateur women golfers. Ladies in this association (SWGA) must have a handicap index of 30.0 or less.

Our sister group, the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Association, was created for the same purpose, but includes only ladies who have reached at least their fiftieth birthday.
Ladies can be members of either or both organizations as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the appropriate membership dues to each group. This membership entitles ladies to play at least once (in each association) at each of the six golf/country clubs that are participants in the SWGA and SSWGA groups: Bomber Bayou Golf Club, East Ridge Country Club, Huntington Park/Querbes Golf Clubs, Northwood Hills Golf Club, Golf Club at Stonebride, and Southern Trace Country Club.

Jingle Bell Scramble

Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell Scramble….

Over twenty-five years ago, the annual Jingle Bell Scramble became a tradition that brings the Shreveport Senior Women’s Association and Shreveport Women’s Golf Association together to participate together at Northwood Hills Golf Club.   It is also one of our opportunities to “play it forward” by donating to the Toys for Tots program handled by the Marine Corps.

This year’s scramble consisted of thirty-seven ladies who “layered up” for the cold weather that warmed up into a beautiful sunny day.  In spite of all the recent rain, the course was nicely manicured and the greens were in great shape.  To keep it that way, we had cart paths only, but it was just a nice walk in the sunshine.

Of the nine teams, scores ranged from 65 to 74 with four teams having a 71, which was par for the day.  Shooting the fine 65 score was Team Debbie Magee, Gayle Gansfuss, Sandra West, and Grace Ireland.  Congratulations ladies!!!

After play, a lovely buffet lunch was served and enjoyed by all.  Thanks to the Northwood ladies for their warm hospitality and wonderful “goodies” as usual.

SWGA Turkey Scramble

For years, our SWGA Turkey Scramble was hosted by Palmetto CC.  With the demise of Palmetto, Shreveport Country Club hosted this year’s scramble, with forty ladies participating on thirteen teams.  The weather was ideal, especially for this time of year, the course was in good shape, and Golf Pro John Schurman and the SCC staff welcomed everyone.

Scores ranged from 69 to 81.  Sixth place required a scorecard playoff between four teams.  All ladies vied for Closest to the Pin on the same hole, and Gloria Utley showed off with her 26 inch putt….and yes, made the birdie.  Winners received Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards.  Results are:

FIRST PLACE - 69

Mary Coker

SSWGA Championship

Twenty-two ladies signed up to play in the SSWGA Championship at Northwood Hills GC in spite of the impending rain forecast….which was right on!  On Day 1, October 27th, rain gear appeared  on every cart and the day was  “cover your clubs….uncover your clubs” on the cart-path-only rain-drenched course.  Yep.  It was a challenge.

Day 2 was a different story as the weather cleared and the cart was mostly accessible by cart, making for much better golfing conditions.  In spite of all the rain, the course was as good as it could possibly be, and the Northwood ladies made everyone feel comfortable and “at home”.

The weather didn’t bother Debbie Magee of Stonebridge as she posted a really nice score of 86, winning the Medalist honors for Day 1, with Cathy Buckley of BWGA at Shreveport CC in second place, seven strokes behind her.

Day 2 was a flip for those two ladies.  Cathy had an outstanding day, closing the gap between the two and needing to make the putt on Hole 18 to tie for a playoff.  But Debbie made a dramatically long putt from just off the green into the hole and Cathy missed her shorter putt.  Debbie Magee won the Senior Championship by one stroke with a total of 178.  Congratulations Debbie!  How exciting!

For the first time this year, there was a new Championship category for the Super Seniors.  Eight ladies competed in this division and Jimmie Zey won the Medalist prize with her score of 96, but Joyce Middleton of Eastridge CC cut 13 strokes off her score on Day 2 and took home the new trophy with her scores of  99 and 86.  Congratulations to Joyce!

Barbara Fay White Cup Team Matches

WHAT A DAY OF TEAM MATCHES!  This was the final day of the two days of the Barbara Fay White Cup, which started this year on September 23rd, with the East Team taking the lead 6 – 4, in the 2-lady team scramble, match play event.

Forty ladies competed on this Day 2 in once-again beautiful weather to vie for the Cup which was won last year by the West Team.  It couldn’t get much more exciting than it did today….much like the recent President’s Cup.

With eight of the ten matches finished, the next match came in with a tie….bringing the total to 9 ½ to 9 ½. Only one match was still out and it was obvious that whichever team won THAT match would determine who won THE Matches.  Who would have thought!  The tenth team in was ALSO a TIE!  The final score: 10 – 10.  EVERYONE WAS A WINNER!
This hasn’t happened before in the history of the Barabara Fay White Cup and isn’t likely to happen again anytime soon.  But how exciting!

And speaking of exciting, we must mention Jill Litton’s (NHGC) eagle out of a bunker as well as Cathy Buckley’s (BWGA) eagle on one of the par five’s where she miraculously hit into the group ahead by hitting a whopper second shot onto the green….ending in an eagle.

Once again, Stonebridge hospitality was great and everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously.  About fifty ladies participated over the two days, giving everyone who wanted to play an opportunity to do so.  Congratulations to Team Matches Chairman Suzanne Tinsley and her committee for a successful event.  We are already looking forward to next year’s matches!

2015 SWGA Championship

The 82nd Annual SWGA Championship was hosted by the Eastridge Ladies Assn. at Huntington Golf Club, a completely "neutral" course for all the twenty-five ladies that participated in the 2-day stroke play event on September 30 and October 1.  The recently renovated course at Huntington was in great shape and Pro Reggie Adams and his entire staff made everyone feel "at home" and special.

Day one was tee times, and ladies were "properly" announced at the #1 Tee Box by Pro Reg Adams as they hit their first tee shot of the day, being cheered on by onlookers.  When the scores were tallied for day one, Kathy Davis of Southern Trace CC had the lead by three strokes under Debbie Magee of Stonebridge, and also winning the Day One Medalist trophy with her score of 77!  Net Medalist went to Mary Moore of Fox Run GC with her very nice score of 84, resulting in a net score of 67 which was three strokes better than the closest competitors.

A cool front rolled in for day two, bringing with it a 1-2 club wind to deal with.  The shotgun start at 9:00am brought out a few sweaters but didn't "cool" the competition.  Kathy Davis kept up the pace she set a day earlier and finished with an 80, edging out last year's champion, Mary Lynn Stuart, by five strokes to win the 2015 Championship.  Kathy also had overall low putts of 56, tied with Debbie Magee of Stonebridge CC.

Net Champion for 2015 is Jill Litton of Northwood Hills GC, who quietly slipped up on everyone with her net scores of 71 and 68, winning by one stroke under Suzanne Patton of BWGA at Shreveport CC.  Jill also took the Closest to the Line award.

At the awards luncheon ladies were treated to a lovely and tasty grilled chicken and fruit salad created by the Huntington and Querbes Food and Beverage Director Tina Bynog, who went "all out" to accommodate our SWGA group.

In addition to the Dick's Sporting Goods Gift Cards that were given to the winners, every player was given a "free green fee" certificate to Huntington by management, making everyone a winner!

Team Matches, Day One

The eighth annual Barbara Fay White Cup competition kicked off today, September 23, at Stonebridge Golf Club.  The format has "morphed" considerably through the years, but the bottom line is that the competition between the East and West Teams is fun and exciting.
This year, we are playing 2-lady scramble in match play format.  The forty ladies who participated today had a great time, with most matches going very near 18 full holes.  When all was done, the East Team leads 6-4 after Day One.  The West team will have to come from behind to defend their title.

The final Team Matches day will be October 14, again at Stonebridge.  At that time, the final champions will be determined.  If you want to play, please contact your Club Rep.

SWGA Playday at Fox Run

Mother Nature sent a really nice breeze today to help make the 100* temps more tolerable for the 32 ladies that came out to play at Fox Run Golf Club.  For the most part, the scores were low, with a third of the field scoring 90 or less!  Not bad, ladies!
Highlight of the day was a hole in one by Joyce Middleton on Hole #8.  This makes two in the last four years.  Congratulations Joyce.

Lady Calvert Tournament

Calvert Crossing Country Club was the site of the Lady Calvert two-lady scramble at Calhoun, LA.  It was flighted after play, so everyone had a chance to win, no matter what their handicaps.

Hospitality and course were great, especially considering how much relentless rain we have had.  For those of you who have never experienced this course, it is one of those traditional, tree-abundant courses where you have to drive a little distance between most greens and the next tee.  The beautiful homes that lined the course are set back considerably, with wonderfully manicured landscaping and abundant colors.

It was hit-and-miss up to the last minute as to whether the tournament would be postponed due to rain forecasts.  The decision to “carry on” as planned was probably a good one in spite of the cart-paths-only condition on the day of the tournament.  It was a drizzle-sunshine-sauna-drizzle-sunshine-sauna day…..but we finished and we were all winners.
Shreveport was represented well by five teams….with two teams in the winners’ circle.  Best score of the day was a great 67 by Marge Richters and Cori Stegall.

This club is also hosting its annual Lords and Ladies Couples Tournament on August 1-2.  For more information, contact the Calvert Crossing Pro Shop.

Friendship

A friend recently sent me this, and I think it reflects what many of us experience, even if we aren't aware of it at the time.  It starts slow, but hang in there.  You'll get something out of it........

In an evening class at Stanford University , the last lecture was on the mind-body connection -- the relationship between stress and disease.

The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman ...  where as for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends.

At first everyone laughed, but he was serious. Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically, this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more serotonin -- a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being.

Women share feelings, whereas men often form relationships around activities. We share from our souls with our sisters/mothers, and evidently that is very GOOD for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.

There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged? Not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking!

So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health!  We are indeed very, very lucky. Sooooo let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health and happiness!

Southern Belle Invitational

The Southern Belle was hosted again at the pristine Southern Trace Country Club on Wednesday, May 6th with practice round on Tuesday.  After practice, there was a “pool party” which included wonderful food and a putting contest.  And once again, tee gift was a pair of Nike shoes!

A whopping field of 68 teams filled the course, which made for a very long day.  The shamble/scramble format is always fun though, and when the scores were tallied, the Overall Gross winners were tied with a score of 70.

After a sudden death playoff which lasted only one hole, Vicki DeLaughter and Teresa Horn were triumphant over Kathy Davis and Debbie Magee, who ended up winning Low Gross in the First Flight.

Overall Low Net went to team Martinak and Salisbury with a nice score of 62.  With only four flights, the winners in each flight had to really shine to win their spots.  Twelve of our local girls were winners.   Congratulations to all!

SWGA Playday at StoneBridge

FINALLY!  We got to kick-off our 2015 SWGA golfing season with a scramble at Stonebridge on Tuesday, April 28th.  You would think that in late April it would be warm.....BUT.....it was a very cool 50-something degrees with north winds!

It didn't matter though, because 37 ladies bundled up and enjoyed the fun and excitement of visiting with ladies we haven't seen in awhile.  Mother Nature caused us to cancel the first event of the year, but we fooled her today.  The course was in great shape considering the tons of rain we have had over the last three months, and as usual, we were treated with the warm Stonebridge hospitality.

We followed our usual tradition of starting the season with a scramble.  This was Events Chairman Moise Allen's first experience in handling events, and she did a great job.  Thanks to everyone for being patient with all the changes.  Here are the results:

Bonnie and Clyde Couples Tournament

The Bonnie and Clyde Couples Tournament, hosted by Northwood Ladies Golf Association, has returned to the golfing circuit for northwest Louisiana.  This tournament was formerly one of the "don't miss" tournaments, but went through a few years' break with the change in management of the club.

The scramble event will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 13 & 14, with 1:00pm shotgun starts on both days.  The $220 per team entry fee includes lunch before play on Saturday, dinner after play on Sunday, practice round (excluding cart) the week prior to the tournament, one mulligan per player per day, and beverages on the course both days.  For more information and entry form, Click Here.

Thankfully, the re-emergence of the tournament comes at a good time since the Palmetto Classic and the Nikki Patterson Invitational are no longer being held in this area.  Although these two are ladies' tournaments, it's great to have a fun couples tournament to step up and fill the void created by these two events.

SSWGA Playday at Crooked Hollow

SSWGA at Stonebridge

The opening event of the 2015 golfing season snuck in between rains on Tuesday, March 17th, at the beautiful Golf Club at Stonebridge for the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Assn.  Thirty-two ladies joined in the fun of the 4-lady scramble on a day that actually produced some sweaty foreheads.

Although the course was cart paths only, it wasn't really muddy and the sand traps were "fluffy" (for those of us who got to find out the hard way).  With the tight lies that are still present with our extremely long winter, it was a challenging day of golf.....but it was great fun!

Scores ranged from 68 to 82 with a log-jam right in the middle of that.  The winning team was Debbie Magee (WGAS), Becky Hollier (WGAS), Tommye Engelcke (BWGA) and Barbara McQuiller (BWGA).

Second best score was 71 by Team Kim Darnell (WGAS), Allison Rains (WGAS), Pat Rice (BWGA) and Bobbie Jo Almond (FRLGA).

Several teams scored 73, but after the scorecard playoff, third place went to Team Cathy Buckley (BWGA), Donna Cobb (FRLGA), Jane Smith (WGAS) and Susan Berry (NHGC).

Fourth place was Team Teri McGuire (WGAS), Kathleen McCoy (BWGA), Jeanette Bohringer (BWGA) and Alyce Wyche (NHGC).

Thanks to all of you who came out to support the SSWGA in spite of the cart paths only.  You are appreciated and everyone was glad to see each other on such a beautiful day.

The next SSWGA event is April 9th, with 9:00am shotgun, at Crooked Hollow GC.  This will be regular stroke play.  Hope to see you then.
