SWGA/SSWGA Jingle Bell Scramble

With the threat of COLD weather and cloudiness looming for days before the annual Jingle Bell Scramble, I did as usual: waited until the last minute to do pairings. For about 4 days, I had no cancellations or additions. Wow! This is unusual.

On the evening of December 3, the night before the Jingle Bell at Northwood Hills, I held my breath and did the pairings. We had a perfect nine groups of four for the shotgun start.

It was pretty nippy at 8:00am on Tuesday, December 4th....in the 30's, but the sun was SHINING. When the ladies started arriving at Northwood, everyone was dressed in layers, but their spirits were up in spite of the cold.

Lo and behold, there were two ladies that showed up who weren't on my list. WE HAD INCREASED from 36 to 38! Who would have thunk it! It did require some shuffling and making a new team with just 3 members, but it worked out great and it was a beautiful day.

After play, the group enjoyed a nice taco/salad/enchilada luncheon complete with tons of homemade desserts, thanks to the Northwood Ladies' Association. Great job, NWLGA!

All the ladies of the SWGA and SSWGA had brought gifts for kids and three young men from the Blanchard Fire Department picked them up for distribution to the needy. Thanks to you guys....for your service and your volunteering to distribute the toys.

Thanks to all of you ladies for making that extra effort to show up, even when you were leary.

SSWGA Playday at Bomber Bayou

The last SSWGA stroke play event of the year was held at Bomber Bayou GC on September 6th, with seventeen ladies participating.  Although there was a forecast for afternoon rain, we had a sunny and hot day all day.  It is always a pleasure to play what used to be Fox Run, and this was no exception.  We understand the modifications that are being made at the course and realize they have to go through this transition to get it really good again.  Thanks to the staff for helping get a few of the ladies onto the Base, even with their names on the list.

 
The best score of the day was a nice 89 by Hui Bordelon (BBLGA) playing in the Senior Flight.  Second best score of the day was Mon Airhart (BWGA) playing in the Super Senior Flight.  Congratulations ladies!

Jan Crowe (BWGA) had the lowest overall Net score of 71 in the Super Senior Flight, and Pat Rice gets honorable mention in that flight with a nice 72.  Linda Colvin (NHGC) had the Low Net score of 73 in the Senior Flight.  Congratulations!

Overall Low Putts was a tie between Joyce Delauder (BWGA), Cathy Buckley (BWGA) and Hui Bordelon, all in the Senior Flight, and all with just 30 putts.  As you know, the greens are going through a big transition, so this is an outstanding feat.  Low putts honors in the Super Senior Flight was 32 by Joanne McDonald (BBLGA). Good stroking, ladies!

Our next SSWGA event is the Turkey Scramble on November 15th at 9:30am at Crooked Hollow GC.  The cost is $37 and includes golf and a really GOOD hamburger.  We also have our annual meeting after golf on this date, so please mark your calendars to participate in this event.  We have a number of agenda items to talk about at the meeting and we need your input.

SWGA Championship

With the super fast age of internet, you all know by now who our SWGA Champion is as well as many of the other winners, but here it is in one posting in case you need to look back on it.

Congratulations to Champion Mary Lynn Stuart (ERCC), shooting outstanding scores of 74 and 76 (150) on August 23-24 at Bomber Bayou GC.  The 74 score also gave her the Medalist Trophy.  The closest score to Mary Lynn’s was a nice 164 by Debbie Magee (WGAS), giving her First Gross in the First Flight.  Congratulations ladies!  Good Golfing!

The Net Champion honors went to Jane Smith (WGAS) who had a 2-day total of 129, also giving her the Net Medalist award for her net score of 65 on day one.  Congratulations Jane!  And following just three strokes behind Jane was Jan Crowe (BWGA) with a net score of 132.  Good golf!

Overall low putts was a really nice 59 by Gina O’Neal (WGAS).  Now THAT’S some good putting!  Honorable mention goes to Becky Farr (WGAS) with 61 putts.

Championship Chairman Brenda Graves and the staff of Bomber Bayou GC are to be thanked for their hospitality and hard work to make this championship so successful.  Thanks to the thirty-three ladies that supported the SWGA group.

On August 16, twenty-nine ladies played the SWGA playday event at Bomber Bayou GC.  This event was also the practice round for the following week's SWGA Championship.

There’s nothing like OLD news and I’m so sorry to be this late posting the results of the SSWGA Championship held July 17-18 at Stonebridge Golf Club.  Seventeen ladies played the event in some pretty hot weather.  As usual, the course was in great condition and Championship Chairman Cheryl Smith, along with the Stonebridge staff, did a great job with the tournament.

The first day started with Medalists scores of 89 for Senior Kim Darnell (WGAS) and 88 for Super Senior Joyce Middleton (ERCC).  Kim Darnell kept up the pace and shot 86 the second day, winning her the SSWGA Senior Champion honors.  Congratulations Kim!  The Net Champion trophy went to Nancy Young (BWGA) with net scores of 76/70.

 

In the Super Senior flight, Jan Crowe (BWGA) shot an outstanding 89/84 to win the Champion trophy for that group.  Congratulations Jan!  Gayle Gansfuss (NHGC) shot two really nice rounds to capture the Super Senior Net Champion award with net scores of 68/67.

Overall Low Putts for the two days was Cathy Buckley (BWGA) with just 60 putts.  Low putt awards went to Senior Martha Lawhorne (BWGA) with 71 putts and Super Senior Donna Ihle (WGAS) with 64.

SSWGA Playday at Northwood Hills GC

Northwood Hills Ladies Golf Association hosted the Shreveport Senior Women’s Golf Association on Tuesday, July 10.  Yep, it was hot, but so was the usual Northwood hospitality, as twenty-five ladies challenged the course and each other.

The overall low gross of the day was a tie between two BWGA ladies: Cathy Buckley and Martha Lawhorne (both in the regular senior division) with a really nice score of 89!  Martha also had the overall low net with a 65, followed by Jan Crowe (BWGA Super Senior) with a 68.  Overall low putts for the day was a 31 and was also a tie between two Northwood ladies: Linda Colvin and Pat Mason.  Congratulations ladies!

SSWGA Playday at Southern Trace

We looked at a bleak weather forecast for the day, but lucked out and had only about 3 or 4 raindrops on Tuesday, June 19th while hosted by the ladies of Southern Trace.  Twenty-six ladies gambled on the rain holding off, and they won!!  The course was beautiful, as usual, and the staff made us feel more than welcome.

The overall low gross score of the day was a really nice 82 by Moise Allen (STCC) who also had the overall low putts of the day with only 27!  Good playing Moise.  The overall low net for the day was Super Senior Pat Rice (NHGC) was a low of 67 AND only 30 putts!
Because there were 13 players in the regular division, we had two flights, while we had only one flight of super seniors.  Results are as follows:

SWGA Playday at Huntington Park (BWGA)

Wow!  Hot was the word of the day for the twenty-eight ladies who came out to play the SSWGA Playday at Huntington Park.  I'm sure that for those of you who haven't played the course since it was re-done, it was a big surprise.  It's waaaay shorter than it used to be.  And the greens are very very receptive.

Mary Lynn Stuart (ERCC) must have really liked it, as she shot a super 75!!!  The next closest gross score was 83 by Cathy Buckley (BWGA).  The low net for the day was 65 by Hui Bordelon (FRLGA) followed by a 66 by Jane Smith (WGAS).  Putts ranged from 30 to 39.  There was a tie for low putts of 30 between Suzanne Patton (NHGC) and Jane Smith (WGAS).  Congratulations ladies!!!

SWGA Playday at Northwood Hills

The Northwood Hills ladies hosted this month's SWGA playday on a beautiful (but hot) day. As usual, the ladies and the staff were great hosts for the event, as twenty-nine SWGA members converged on the course in spite of the heat. Northwood is the BEST when it comes to feeding their guests, with tons of homemade goodies to greet everyone. Thanks NHLGA!

The low score of the day was a mighty nice 81 by Cathy Buckley (BWGA). She also had the overall lowest putts for the day with just 27! Now that's some putting! The overall low net for the day day was Melissa Brenner (NHGC) with a really nice 63. Congratulations ladies! You can view all the scores in one of the photos below.

SSWGA Playday at EastRidge CC

Thirty energetic ladies, one beautiful golf course, and gorgeous weather.....what a wonderful mixture! That was the recipe at EastRidge Country Club on May 1st as the ERCC ladies hosted the SSWGA for the stroke play event. The course was in great condition and the ladies took advantage of it. Eighteen of the thirty ladies played in the Super Senior flight (70 years and older).

The overall low gross score of the day was an 86 by Cathy Buckley (BWGA). She also had lowest putts with just 29, helped by two chip-ins! Overall low net was a 63 by Kathy Davis (NHGC). Good golfing ladies!

SSWGA Playday at Huntington Park

The Golf Club at Huntington Park hosted the SSWGA ladies association with 18 ladies participating. The course was in good shape and the staff was very helpful. This was the first stroke play event of the season and the attendance was less than we hoped for, but those that played enjoyed the golf and the fellowship.

The SSWGA has provisions for the regular senior ladies (50 and over) as well as the super senior ladies (70 and over). This year, fifty percent of the membership are super seniors, and each year, the number is growing in that category. The numbers were true in this event also.

In the regular division, the low gross score of the day was 90 by Jane Smith (WGAS), while Low Net was Daneita Adams (BWGA) with a score of 70. There was a tie for Low Putts between Martha Lawhorne (BWGA) and Cheryl Smith (WGAS) with just 34 putts.

In the Super Senior division, Joyce Middleton (ERCC) won Low Gross honors (even with a gimped knee) with a very nice 83. Low Net was a 66 by Jan Crowe (BWGA) and Low Putts of 33 by Pat (Miller) Mason (NHGC).

Our next SSWGA event is at Eastridge CC on May 1st. We are looking forward to a good turnout. If you haven't already signed up, do so immediately for this opportunity to play this very nice golf venue.

SWGA Playday at Stonebridge

The Golf Club at Stonebridge hosted the SWGA's first gross/net competition of 2018 on April 10th.  It started out mighty chilly but thanks to the bright sunshine, we all got defrosted about halfway through the round.  The forty-three ladies that participated peeled off layers of clothing as the day progressed and enjoyed a really nice day of golf and socializing after the long, winter months.

The low round of the day was 77 by Kathy Davis of Stonebridge who also shared the Low Putts honors with Becky Hollier, also of Stonebridge, stroking for putts only 27 times!

Ironically, Low Net score of the day was by Kathy Davis.....of Northwood.....with a great 65 net.  (I think I'm going to change my name to Davis!)  BUT....I did have an Eagle on hole #5 from about 100 yards out!!!

This year, there was a change in the format which does not provide for pre-flighting by handicap.  Instead, it is flighted AFTER the round based on the gross score.  You can see the scores of the entire field in the pictures below.
