About Us....

The Shreveport Womens Golf Association was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship and friendly competition among local amateur women golfers. Ladies in this association (SWGA) must have a handicap index of 30.0 or less.

Our sister group, the Shreveport Senior Womens Golf Association, was created for the same purpose, but includes only ladies who have reached at least their fiftieth birthday.
Ladies can be members of either or both organizations as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the appropriate membership dues to each group. This membership entitles ladies to play at least once (in each association) at each of the six golf/country clubs that are participants in the SWGA and SSWGA groups: Bomber Bayou Golf Club, East Ridge Country Club, Huntington Park/Querbes Golf Clubs, Northwood Hills Golf Club, Golf Club at Stonebride, and Southern Trace Country Club.

LWGA State Match Play Tournament

The LWGA State Match Play Championship was contested on June 20-23 at Koasati Pines Golf Resort in Kinder, LA.
This year there were seven ladies from the SWGA that participated in the event. Missing from this picture is Teri McGuire who was out on the course watching the other players….in the heat.

We were ALL winners just to have finished in the tremendous heat. But officially, there were only two that took home prizes. Sounds bad, but it was mostly a pairing “situation”.

On the first day in the Fourth Flight, Joyce Middleton (the 1st place seed) was matched against Kathleen McCoy (the 8th place seed). In the same flight, Debbie Magee (2nd place seed) was matched against Donna Cobb (7th place seed). So as you see, two of our four had to lose and go to the Consolation Bracket. On this day, Kathleen beat Joyce and Donna beat Debbie.

In the First and Third Flights respectively, Teri McGuire and Mary Jo Gray both won their matches. Phyllis Ryan was in the Fifth Flight and lost her match, moving into the Consolation Bracket, and the luck of the draw gave her a Bye on the second day.

The second day wasn’t a good one for us. Donna, Teri, and Kathleen all lost their Winner Bracket matches, leaving only Mary Jo, Debbie, Joyce and Phyllis to represent the SWGA ladies in the finals.

The final pairings pitted Joyce and Debbie against each other and Debbie came out the victor, winning the Fourth Flight Consolation Bracket. Mary Jo lost her match, winning second place in the Third Flight of the Winners’ Bracket. Phyllis lost her final match.

This is a great tournament and we encourage more of you to participate if you possibly can in the future. The next State Tournament is the Four Ball that is hosted at Stonebridge. It is a two-lady best ball event and will be held on August 8-10. There are a few spots left, so there is still time to sign up.

SWGA Playday at Southern Trace

Southern Trace Country Club hosted our fourth SWGA Playday of this year on Tuesday, June 15th.  Forty ladies braved the 100+ degrees and finished in record time.  Thanks to everyone for keeping the playing pace moving.

We had four flights this time and I'd like to mention the most outstanding accomplishments in this posting.  Anne Ridley of STCC just joined SWGA this month and was the low gross scorer for the day with a nice 83.  Also new to SWGA this month is Kyong Lee of BWGA.  She scored a net 65 along with Jerry Hobson (FRLGA) and Donna Phillips (STCC).

Kip Anderson (ERCC) showed her putting prowess with a stunning 23 putts!!!  She had 3 zero putts.  In addition, Joyce Middleton (ERCC), Paulette Lee (WGAS), and Jackie Wood (BWGA) all had one zero putt.  Congratulations ladies!

Our next SWGA event will be hosted at Stonebridge on July 13 with an 8:30am shotgun start.  As an added bonus, Stonebridge will charge us only $15 rather than $20.  How can you pass up such a bargain???  Sign up with your club representative.

For a few pictures of the STCC event and all the winners, check out the right column.

SSWGA Championship

Twenty-eight ladies participated in the two-day2010 SSWGA Championship held at Southern Trace Country Club June 8-9 in unseasonably hot weather.  But everyone hung in for the duration.

When the numbers were all calculated, the 2010 Champion was Mary Coker, winning with a two day total of 179 on her home course by one stroke under Teri McGuire of BWGA.  The first day Medalist was Donna Cobb, coming in with an 85, three strokes better than her closest competitor Cathy Buckley, also of BWGA.  Donna was also the 1st Low Net winner of the First Flight and won the overall low putts award.

The ladies enjoyed a very nice lunch and door prizes at the awards luncheon following play....just as the rain set in.  Joanne McDonald and her committee did a great job of hosting the event and we all extend a sincere thanks for all the work involved by those that put it all together for us.

A complete list of winners and a slideshow presentation is included in the right column of the blog.  Keep in mind that you can click on any picture of the slideshow presentations to get a fullsize picture.

For SWGA members, our next playday is June 15.....also at Southern Trace.  Don't forget to sign up.

SWGA at Eastridge

I apologize for the delay in getting the results of the playday posted for everyone; however, I haven't had internet availiability since that day.

We had a really good turnout with 49 ladies playing.  I also need to apologize for the misunderstanding of how to play Hole #10.  I had made arrangements when it was scheduled in March to have the rules printed out, but it just slipped my mind until I arrived on Tuesday, so we thought that announcing the rules would be adequate.  Apparently some ladies didn't hear how it would work.  I feel really bad about that.  You can bet that it won't happen again, not that it helps anything for this time.

Just so you'll know how it was SUPPOSED to work:  after hitting a ball into the ditch, whether it was your first, second, or ANY shot, you could walk around to the drop zone and take an extra penalty shot.  Once again, I sincerely regret the mix-up.  Please check out the right column for a list of winners and a small slideshow.

The next SWGA playday will be at Southern Trace on June 15.

The term "Caddie"

Ever wonder where the term "caddie" came from?  One of the most popular stories about the origin deals with a "lady" golfer.

When Mary (later Queen of Scots) went to France as a young girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scottish game 'golf.' We are told that he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment.

To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her.  In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it to 'caddie.'

SSWGA Playday Palmetto CC

In addition to our SSWGA playday at Palmetto CC, it was also Marie McFarland's birthday.  Hope it was a good one for her!

We had forty ladies participating in today's event on a beautiful, warm day.  The course was in great shape and everyone enjoyed the day....especially Grace Ireland who shot her all-time low score of 83.  Congratulations Grace!

SWGA Crooked Hollow Playday

Northwood Hills GC hosted our May 3rd playday at the Crooked Hollow Golf Course on a beautiful, sunny day.  Thirty-eight ladies participated and enjoyed the day.  The greens were a bit rough, but that was offset by extremely long "roll" in the fairways.  Hope everyone enjoyed the great breakfast and warm hospitality that John Graham always provides at Crooked Hollow.   For list of winners, check the right column.
